Welcome to Cannabis India!
Cannabis in India has a deep rooted history that is veiled in both religion and legends. According to The Vedas, cannabis was one of five sacred plants. The Vedas describe how cannabis was created when the Gods stirred the heavenly oceans with the peak of Mount Mandara. A drop of “amrita” (heavenly nectar), which translates to immortality fell from the sky and a sacred cannabis plant sprouted on the spot. Lord Siva brought the cannabis plant down from Mount Mandara and showed to humanity the wonders it possessed. India has never not known the importance of cannabis as it has always had a deep connection with cannabis through Ayurveda and through Bhang, a drink made of cannabis that can be traced all the way back to 1000 BC.
But The 1961 international treaty, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, classed cannabis with hard drugs. During the negotiations, the Indian delegation opposed its intolerance to the social and religious customs of India. As a compromise, the Indian Government promised to limit the export of Indian hemp. In 1985 the Indian government passed the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and with that cannabis, a gift from the gods was taken away from us.
In the years since, the social and medical importance of cannabis in India, something that was so deep rooted in our culture was completely changed to something toxic. It’s as if we all forgot of all the ways it can help us and instead it became a subject of taboo, shunned by society and spoken in whispers.
Today it’s seems like cannabis is looked at only as a negative and people have forgotten all about the wonderful medical solutions it provides to so many people. And that’s where Cannabis India comes in! This site is dedicated to help the people of India remember the wonders of cannabis and to help irradiate the stigma that has been developed over the years. While the debate of recreational cannabis can be fought strong from both sides the use of cannabis in the medical world and in industry is a no brainer. While the work may be hard and the journey slow, together we can make this world a better place. And we choose to start with cannabis. A plant given to us by the Gods.
